DanceBrazil supports two projects in the North East of Brazil, the home of Brazilian Dance.
This project provides a range of assistance to 140 children in the shantytown or favela of Pirambu. This is one of the most violent areas of the city of Fortaleza, due in part to the trade in and use of crack cocaine. As well as poverty, the children of Pirambu have had their lives affected by the disappearance of parents and siblings. Children as young as 11 or 12 years have been forced into prostitution. For many, the meals and snacks provided by the project will be their only nourishment in a day. The project operates very much on a 'shoestring' basis and they are always in need of financial support to continue the work of providing food, homework support, arts and crafts and leisure activities, sewing classes for mothers. Their ambition at the moment is to provide a computer room so that children may be equipped and qualified to obtain employment.Suely visited the project in 2009 and keeps in regular touch with developments.
The Light in the Northeast Project is a new project providing a primary health care vehicle to travel throughout the 'sertao' (desert) region of the North East of Brazil. Brazil's poorest people live in that arid and barren area trying to eke out livings from subsistence farming. They battle with frequent droughts in what is an already harsh environment. The vehicle will provide a general clinic and dental clinic and offer gynaecological and paediatric services, and also support and care for pregnant women. Health care education and disease prevention programmes will also operate and will focus on Breast Cancer examinations, Sexual Health, Nutrition. Alongside these health elements there will also be a cultural education programme and a spiritual development programme. The first primary care vehicle was being commissioned just as Suely visited the programme's headquarters in Recife in August 2009. The vehicle will start operating on 10th September 2009.
